In the countryside about halfway between Florence and Rome is the town of Assisi, famous for Saint Francis, who started the Franciscan order of monks. The town is built on a hillside, with narrow streets that lead up to a medieval castle on the top of the hill (now in ruins). The biggest attractions are the town's historic churches, mainly Saint Francis' Basilica.
