Maui is the most popular of the Hawaiian islands for American tourists, and it's easy to see why. There are scenic views along pretty much every part of the island, and you can visit the heavily-populated tourist beaches or find a secluded trail to hike, depending on your taste.

I visited (and did some hiking at) Haleakala, drove the Road to Hana, explored the rural southern end of the island, and visited some of the popular beaches & landmarks. The most interesting parts of the island, though, were the rocky stretches of shoreline/cliffs all along the northwestern coast. Some spots have hiking trails and are marked from the road; others are basically untouched by foot traffic, and you're on your own to figure out how to hike down to the water while making sure you don't slip & die in the process. :) This was probably my favorite single part of Hawai'i.
