We spent 3 days in Florence, checking out museums (Florence is museum heaven) and churches, and just wondering the streets enjoying the artists & street performers. While Venice is what most Americans think of when they picture old Italian culture, Florence just seems to be less show and more substance. This was the 2nd time I'd been (I went all the way back in 2004 in my first trip to Europe), and it just made me want to go back again. :)
